Our Amazing Minds
We have a conscious mind and an unconscious mind. The conscious mind is just the tip of the iceberg, it's aware of very little in comparison to our unconscious mind and this is all for good reason. If we were to be aware of everything we've ever learned, emotionally and intellectually we would probably feel like we’d gone mad!
Our unconscious mind holds everything very efficiently. Everything stored away, with the relevant information available for the given situation. Most of these experiences are normal experiences and they are linked to normal, average memories.
If you’ve had a bad experience with a dog, when you’re next in a similar situation you will react in accordance to the previous experience. These experiences can also be learned through others rather than physically being acted out by you. You may have learned the art of low self esteem, noticing someone going through an experience is all you need to develop a code for a similar reaction, whether that is your intention or not. You can then use that code in your own situation. Once it’s yours you can adapt and grow it, this can seem like a very unconscious process, that’s how adaptable the unconscious mind is.
What is hypnotherapy?
The word hypno is derived from the Greek word ‘sleep’ although I would like to point out that it is by no means sleep. The brain waves measured during sleep are low, while the brain waves measured during hypnosis are high. Hypnotherapy is an altered state often referred to as ‘trance’. You will be very aware of staring out of a car window or gazing into space, this is an altered state that is perfect for suggestibility (change). A hypnotherapist will induce a trance similar to this although the depth of the trance differs with each individual. That isn’t to say that the deeper the trance appears the more suggestible you are. Many people remember everything as if they weren’t in a trance at all, while others don’t remember anything and swear they were sleeping like a baby but then exit the trance at my request, without me changing my tone or level of voice. If you were sleeping that wouldn’t happen.
While you are in an altered state the hypnotherapist will gently and carefully address the area of change by informing the unconscious mind of unnecessary behaviours. The reason an altered state is needed is because our conscious mind is very critical and often will only react on the unconscious messages. For example, if you have a phobia of elevators, simply going to the elevator doors and telling yourself you’re being irrational probably won’t do the trick, this is because it hasn’t been changed at an unconscious level; and how does that individual block there own conscious mind out in-order to inform the unconscious of better behaviour, when they can only respond to the information the unconscious is giving to them in first place. The simple answer is ‘with great difficulty’!
Once the unconscious mind has been informed of a more productive action it doesn’t have a problem with responding, as nothing is a problem to the unconscious mind, it isn’t critical, only responsive. So remember, when you’re consciously analysing whether or not change is possible, be aware that your unconscious mind really won’t give it that much thought, it will happily go with whatever is suggested to it. All you have to do is know you want the change and the hypnotherapist will do the rest.
You might be interested in knowing you can be sure of the safety of the information someone like myself is giving you while in an altered state. As I’ve mentioned in the previous text, the individual is completely aware of everything that is being said at all times, unconsciously if not consciously. Hypnotherapy assists in change with things that are external to ones inner core. A response from experience isn’t ones inner core, safety on the other hand is. I could hypnotise you all day long to jump out of a window and you wouldn’t do it. I couldn’t change your moral code either as this is also your inner core, your moral fibre. If I was to suggest anything that appeared immoral or unethical to you, you would more than likely wake from your trance or simply reject it.
What to expect:
Some people understand roughly what hypnotherapy is but have no idea of what a hypnotherapy session entails.
- Firstly the session will be discussed with you
- You will attend a consultation so I can be sure hypnosis is a good option for you, there are rare occasions it is not. I will gather information that will help me determine the level of treatment you require. If I'm happy and you're happy we will arrange your session(s)
The session;
- You will be welcomed into a warm ambient environment.
- I will answer any further questions you may have.
- You will then be induced into trance. The process will last up to an hour - you can expect to feel relaxed and in control at all times.
- You will be gently brought out of trance and the process is complete.
- Follow ups will be arranged individually and they usually take place via phone or email. You can request your preference.
Group Hypnotherapy for 'Stress'
Take this opportunity to de-stress using techniques that are painless and extremely effective.
Stress is something that appears to control so many people. To be stressed means you’re not functioning as effectively as you could be in all areas of your life including relaxing!! Yes even when relaxing; most people are shocked when I inform them that being stressed changes all functions of the body therefore taking the time out to read a book or go for a walk still doesn’t have the effect that it would have if you weren’t stressed to begin with.
Why distress?
- When you are stressed your body can’t digest food properly therefore nutrients simply go to waste. This leads to you feeling tired and more stressed!
- De-stressing allows you to remain in a frame of mind that recognises stress is detrimental, making it much easier to make rational, effective decisions.
- The stress hormone Cortisol causes an increase in abdominal fat which is the reason for many stress suffers to also suffer with weight issues.
- Chronic and acute stress can cause difficulty with concentration and memory. Studies show that individuals subjected to stress have more difficulty with short-term and verbal memory, and stress makes it much more difficult to pay attention to detail, causing careless accidents and problems with work or academic demands.
The body doesn’t recognise the difference between the stress you experience in the office or the stress you experience whilst saving your life. When your body recognises stress it prepares and responds your body to cope with whatever may lie a head...
- Less oxygen is delivered to the less vital parts of your body in order to supply your organs with what’s available; your skin is not classed as a vital organ and neither are your muscles.
- Blood pressure increases to supply blood more efficiently.
- Heart rate increases to pump more blood throughout the body.
- Rate of respiration increases to get more oxygen from the atmosphere.
- Using techniques such as Hypnotherapy, it has been proven you can dramatically reduce the symptoms of stress, making a difference to all the areas of your life mentioned above. The techniques I use during this evening are designed to help you make permanent changes in your everyday life.
You are asked to do nothing other than relax. I will take you off the face of the earth in spirit!
This isn't stage hypnosis and no one will be singled out or made to do anything other than relax!
The feedback I have had from previous groups is amazing and it only stands to get better!
The group situation feeds the atmosphere and by no way limits your experience. This will be a very personal journey that you will benefit from hugely!
